Corns and calluses are hard or thick areas of skin that can be painful.

They are caused by pressure or rubbing of the skin. All ages can be affected.

The most common causes:

Wearing high heels, tight and uncomfortable shoes or shoes that are the wrong size.

Not wearing socks with shoes.

Bunions

Hammer toe

Symptoms

Corns and calluses are not the same thing.

Corns are smaller than calluses and have a hard centre surrounded by inflamed skin. They can develop in areas such as the tops and sides of your toes and even between your toes. They can also be found in weight bearing areas and can be painful when pressed.

Calluses are rarely painful. They usually develop on the soles of your feet, especially under the heels or balls of your feet as well as on the side of your toes. They vary in size and are often larger than corns

Treatment

Firstly, we aim to find the cause. Treatment is then generally simple and painless. We use a small blade to remove the hard centre of the corn and any excess surrounding callus. In the case of large callused areas which have been become painful, again we use a small blade to reduce the thickness.
